How to register a domain name
Once you’ve found the suitable domain name for your web site, you need to check whether it has been registered by someone else or not.
To do this, you can visit this site. This is domain name registrar’s website. Namecheap.com has long been involved in this business. That is one good indicator that this company is reliable and the one you can trust.
They offer one domain name registration for less than 10 dollars a year. Now once you’ve arrived at their website, you will notice a textbox where you can put your desired domain name and hit the search button to check its availability.
You’re lucky enough if that domain name is available to you for registration. Notice that there are lots of TLD extensions like .com, .net, .info etc, but I recommend you to use .com extension.
Although this is not compulsory, you need to remember that people online tend to use the domain name with .com extension when typing the web address on their web browser. But it is totally up to you to another extension especially when someone else has registered the .com one.
One more thing is make sure your domain name is easy to remember and not confusing. Try compare these, 4u.com, foryou.com, 4you.com and for-u.com. Obviously all of these web address are same when you just hear it right? So avoid using numbers in your domain name if you can.
The web visitors may end up arriving at your competitor’s website if you are not aware of this.
After you’ve made the final decision on what your domain name is, you’ll be taken into a few easy steps to complete the registration process including payment.
Make sure you tick on Free WHOIS protection, so your personal details will be unavailable from the internet world. After the registration process is complete, all you need to do next is wait for an email from namecheap.
The email you received should contain information about your new account username and login password. The next time you want to register another new domain name from namecheap, just use this account to manage it.
As I told you in my previous post, DNS settings is very important. Once you got your own web hosting account, make sure to point this default name server to the ones given by your host.
In next post I’m going to discuss about web hosting especially what features you need to know before subcribing to that service.
